Cancer Choices was formed in 2004 as an independent patient lead self help group with the aims of supporting people living with cancer, particularly those in the rural community.
A number of the group who themselves had come through a cancer diagnosis had previously established a local group and found that there was so much more to do for those experiencing cancer.
Their own experiences identified that there was a very real lack of appropriate, timely and accessible information available to them. They also found that coming from small towns and rural communities enhanced their sense of isolation as they would have to travel outside of their own area for treatment, support and information.
Madeleine Mulgrew was successful in getting an award from UnLtd which offered financial help in getting the project off the ground as well as mentoring and advice. The new group also were greatly supported by the local community, business and schools which provided some further much needed funds.
Since the formation of the organisation the local council, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and the Mayor have continued to provide valuable support and encouragement for our work. We look forward to their continued support in the future.
The work of Cancer Choices took a giant leap forward in 2006 when we were successful in obtaining funding from the Big Lottery Fund for a three year project. This funding allowed us to cover administration costs as well as employ a Development Manager and a part time Administration Assistant. This has ensured that our work is delivered in a professional manner and can impact at the very highest of levels in the health service.
Cancer Choices have continued to develop our services and work closely with other cancer charities across Northern Ireland. We help deliver a range of training opportunities for cancer patients, carers, family members and professionals. We organise various events throughout the year which help raise awareness of cancer and the impact which it has on the whole community.
To help us continue to deliver an effective service please consider making a donation to Cancer Choices, see the link “Supporting Us” for further information.
